Cambodia Day 8: Battambang I

We travelled to Arn Chorn-Pond's hometown of Battambang in the morning.  Arn met us at the hotel, and accompanied us for the remainder of our time in Battambang.  We started with a quick lunch where Arn introduced us to Sop Heap, a young man who had just gotten his degree and was now teaching, both secondary and adult literacy.  We then traveled to Wat Ek Phnom.  This was the temple where Arn was held prisoner by the Khmer Rouge and it was incredibly emotional for all of us, but especially for Arn, who seldom visits Battambang as it is so difficult for him to return. This man's courage and heart continually astonish me.

On our way to Wat Banon, we stopped at a small business making rice paper.  While the process was quite interesting, it was Arn finding an older woman who knew his family which brought tears to many eyes.  This happened again the next day as well.

At about the middle of the day the group climbed a seemingly endless flight of stairs (300 meters of elevation) that brought us to yet another temple at its peak. This temple was small but remarkable in its detail. All of this was made better by a great view of the area from the top. Thanks to a light drizzle of rain, the group decided to descend and move on with our day.

We then had a great meal at Jaan Bai, another restaurant that trains local people with skills so that they can then take care of their families.  In all, a busy, productive and emotional day.
